Ashwagandha is the common name of Withania somnifera, also known “Indian ginseng”, belonging to the Solenaceae family, same as tomatoes.
The plant is a woody shrub that grows up to about two meters high, it’s covered with small hairs and produces green-yellowish flowers and red berries. It is native to India, where it is considered one of the key plants of Ayurveda, bit it can also be found somewhere along the Mediterranean basing and in Africa.
Ashwagandha possesses a complex blend of bioactive substances capable of acting on a widespread level.
Among the chemical constituents, the most biologically active ones include alkaloids and saponins, but above all lactones known as withanolides, including withaferin A and D. The richest plant part in phytochemicals is the root.
Withania somnifera is an excellent tonic-adaptogen, with well-known relaxing effects, contributing positively to physical and mental well-being.
